You’re looking to do something differently in your business – moving to automated processes, significant technical changes, changes to manufacturing production lines… and so on.

So, why spend time defining the details of the change, why not just get on with it?

Understanding the Vision that defines the change and the steps needed to achieve it will also provide a better definition of what effort, time and cost will be involved. It will also help identify all the threats to success.

Defining an appropriately detailed Business Case provides the clearest information on how a business should approach a specific change.

The usual approach will tend to focus on the obvious, positive effects - the product or service selling points that created the initial desire for change.

But, understanding the wider impacts of the change and how it will affect the existing business processes – the benefits and the risks involved – will provide a clearer view on whether the proposed solution is the right one and, if it isn’t, the analysis should point towards a more appropriate solution.

Therefore, the best place to start is with the required benefits and Values – what is it that the business needs and wants to be like - What the Business Needs to Succeed.

Once this has been established, the business will need to look at what needs to be put in place and what needs to be used to deliver the desired outcomes.

These outcomes form the Business Case and will provide the basis for the delivery plan for the change. Which means the business will be at the start of an exciting journey to its next stage…
